Douglas Bratthall
We mourn the loss of Douglas Bratthall, a close friend, colleague and teacher. Douglas Bratthall was an outstanding researcher in the field of cariology. The focus of his work was dedicated to the evaluation of the cariogenic microflora. The results of his efforts decisively promoted our knowledge about the development of caries. The development of the popular Dentocult SM test for rapidly identifying cariogenic mutans streptococci is only one eminent example of his work. Besides his occupation with basic research topics Douglas Bratthall intensively dedicated his professional life to the global health issues. As a WHO officer he was involved in the analysis of oral health worldwide and used his comprehensive expertise in the field to help to improve the caries situation in many countries.
Douglas Bratthall was one of the founding members of IHCF. His active engagement in the IHCF board helped to initiate and promote a multitude of projects and activities and substantially contributed to the rapid growth and scientific reputation earned by this institution early on. Next to his eminent dental knowledge and his critical-analytical thinking we equally will always rember Douglas Bratthall as a person. Due to his integrity and his always friendly and discrete attitude he became much more than only a respected colleague and teacher to those who were lucky to know him personally. We all will miss him very much
